October ferries and beyond

Again replacing what has been lost, here is the combined ferry timetable for the rest of this month. We’re waiting for early November (Panormitis Festival) times, and for Blue Star’s complete winter programme. No doubt Blue Star want a definite return to service date for the Blue Star Patmos so they can post a timetable without having to change ferries after bookings have already been made.

Dodekanisos Seaways however have released times from 12 November 2017  up to 31 March 2018. Predictably this is a 4 sailings a week service for Symi, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, with a morning departure northbound from Rhodes, returning in the late afternoon.

Booked today for our June holiday 218. We have bookedwith Olympic now that Monarch are no longer. We leave Manchester at 8.15am. Will we make it to Symi on the same day?

So you’re on Olympic’s charter flight, presumably on a Wednesday. The first thing to say is that, as a charter flight, the flight times may well change between now and June 2018, as air traffic control slots for 2018 summer charter flights aren’t allocated until February 2018. Right now what you see is what they’ve asked for, not what they’ll actually be given. Indeed knowing Olympic Holidays of old, the actual airline could easily change as well, one year they changed the airline twice before the first flight even left for the summer.
The second thing is that absolutely nobody knows what the ferry timetables for summer 2018 will look like, including the ferry companies, at this stage. If the 2017 summer timetable is used again, then no, you won’t make it to Symi the same day, because the Wednesday afternoon ferry left at 3pm. That would leave you just 30 minutes to disembark, go through immigration, reclaim your baggage, and get from the airport to the harbour, which is impossible, I’m afraid.
The summer ferry timetables will start appearing just after Christmas – at least 3 different companies are involved, and it may be as late as April before all have published their times for June. There are also several different government contracts involved in Symi’s ferry service, all of these are due for re-tender between now and June and the successful tenderer may change times from those that applied last year.
